Any tips you have for a beginning H/L player would be awesome....I've been playing it for about 3 weeks. Any help with basics would be great, like beginning "good" hands etc. I don't have any book on H/L, but maybe you could recommend one.

One thing I can't figure, and I've looked for the answer, is how come there are not low pots in every hand ? Someone told me there had to be a minimum of 5 active players at the tbl, but I'm playing right now and there is a full tbl of players and sometimes there is no low hand.

Puuullllleasseeeeeeee help the H/L challenged any way you can.....

Tanks,
CT

super system(the bible)-has a section, Tom McEvoys tournament poker,I haven't read S&M's book yet but everything else I have by them is excellent-

there are several websites that deal with this subject- check out 'specially the forum @ 2 + 2, and the pokerportal has a list of dozens of sites-

if you're just starting out the play $ tables and sitngos @ pokershares(UB),pokerstars, etc., are real good at getting familiar with the game and whatnot- I play low limit stuff at most of the sites so say hey if yer 'round

This site: http://www.o8poker.com/
has a good list of starting hands (etc etc)
Check out the 'getting started' section.

"Championship Omaha" by Cloutier and McEvoy
Easy read... w/ ALL the 'basic' info on ALL forms of Omaha

A low hand must contain 5 (unpaired) cards below a value of 8
Ex: 8-7-4-3-A would be a (poor) qualifying low.

(The # of players in the hand is irrelevant)

I feel that there are not enough Omaha or 7 card tournaments out there for players to truly appreciate the game. I prefer both of these versions of poker to Texas Hold Em.

If u make it a habit to use the hutchinson points system, u become very good at deducing the hands worth playing, even without addign the points up.

Omaha 8's is all about draws, and not playing second best hands.
Getting stuck with no lo hand and a K hi flush against that A hi is one painful way to check that out.

And watch that counterfieted lo. My biggest mistake was playing A2** like it was the cure for cancer, and having it counterfieted, and my chips dissappear.

Yeah it's a tough game. I've played it live (brick and mortar) only once in a $4/8 kill gamein Phoenix, Az. Had AA58 with A5 hearts one hand in a kill pot. I raise pre flop and saw the cards come out as AJ5. 2 callers for $48 in pot. I flopped top trips and I'm thinking BINGO! I'm 2nd to play of 3 in. Goes check, bet, call, call for total pot of $72. A 9 comes off and I'm looking great. But there are 2 diamonds on board. 1st to play surprisingly bets, so I raise. 3rd guy in cold calls my raise and 1st calls too. $96 more in pot for total of $168. A 4 hits the river and I'm thinking, sht, I just lost half the pot but my trip Aces must still be good. 1st in checks, I bet and BAM, 3rd guy in raises me. %^$*#^%$ I CALL. BONE HEAD had called my raise cold on turn with a hand of 2233!!! I just got screwed royally by his 4 out river chase. He didn't even have the low flush draw. I figured #1 in was betting that on turn. Total loss of pot was at $232!! I walked out swearing and mumbling to myself and screaming in the car all the way home.

Omaha H/L is the best poker game out there as far as I'm concerned! Holdem is so much about patience where as omaha is such a drawing game you will inevidibly play more more hands and your brain will get a serious workout!

When playing H/L just remember the advice others have given about your low being counterfitted. Sometimes I can tell someone else had made the nut low and is raising thinking they are the only one that could possibly have the nut low. I have gone so far as to tell them I too have the nut low and to stop raising our sure-to-be quartered pot.

Now if you have a good high hand and the nut low - then knock yourself out and raise away!

See you at the omaha tables! 8)

Thanx for the thread and the articles. I suck at Omaha and have been trying to get a handle on the games for a while now. These articles should help me to understand the game better. 8)
